Electroacoustic ensemble "le chantier" creats live geometrical spaces and gradiant sound density.

Electro noises and unusual acoustic sounds are the basic material for our experimentation in our electro expanded jazz quartet instrumetarium.

Fugue & heap architecture where electronic process "listen" and react to frequencies and dynamics, improvised pieces stand-up through strange worlds in state of emergency.

"Le Chantier" lives in Lyon (France-69) since january 2008.

resist  |  basement  |  interaction  |  elements  |  space

Music, as a resistance act in a regardless society for freedom, aims reactivity and spontaneous forms inside the political fields of contemporary musical expression.

Sound space is investigated from the roots of 20th century minimalism to free jazz and noise progressive cultures, linked to urban pardoxes that are inherent in a better world quest.

resist  |  basement  |  interaction  |  elements  |  space

Every worker-musician belongs to a specific sound teritory, based on his own practice and conceptual thinking to the instrument, either electro or acoustic. Striking knowleges and classical pratices to free music, physical and architectural concepts, strategy in sound process can build a teritory of collective experiments, weaving musical energies together.

Le Chantier means a place where meet a joystick & a harpsichord, a sax key concated in a wave synthesizer, a gumy ball rubed on the harmony desk, feathers and bolts on drum's skins, 0 & 1 scupting a white noise cloud...

"usine" modular computer program can "listen" and react in live to the acoustic music.

Sensitivity to dynamics, frequencies & note's height permits computer to act & react in an autonomous way with a specific abstract sound created on the acoustic base. Through "patchs", preprogrammed by the musicians, the computer is told to react in real time, depending of the color and density we want for the improvisation.

In that way, "patches" and "scripts" are the only field of of composition in our improvised music.

resist  |  basement  |  interaction  |  elements  |  space

Elements are a first aproach to sound for a 5 pieces serie about earth, metal, water, air and fire. Each element as specific density, dynamics, touch qualities we aim to transpose in sound and music.

Computer is, in that way, a very interesting tool to modelize that elements and use them in interactive and generative processes.

For exemple, in "earth" the huge scale of materials can be used to granulize sounds until a total transformation in grains or produce a sound much more compact closed to stone. On earth, we are also able to walk, contrary to water, this as an influence on the way we improvise and listen to each other during live performances.

resist  |  basement  |  interaction  |  elements  |  space

Sound projections are spatialized, that means multiple points for music diffusion.

We use to play in 4 points (in each corner of the arena) or in a classical hal stereophony. Public is invited to come closer to the musicians, walk or lay-down to be inside of the building place and feel the different speeds, colors, for traveling in a strange sound magma.
